Many eastern Native American tribes valued prickly ash as a remedy for upset stomach, sore throats, aching muscles, skin infections, to stimulate saliva flow, and various other conditions. The bark was also widely used by herbalists to treat rheumatic conditions Prickly Ash may be used in a way that is similar to Cayenne, although it is slower in action. It is used in many chronic problems such as rheumatism and skin diseases. Any sign of poor circulation calls for the use of this herb, such as chilblains, cramp in the legs, varicose veins and varicose ulcers. Prickly Ash Bark is an under-used herb considering the variety of good reasons for which it can be taken. One use is to increase the amount of oxygen and nutrients available to muscle and other tissue, bringing warmth and renewed vigour. A must for those suffering cold hands and feet during winter months. Combines well with Ginger and Black Cohosh or Celery.
Contraindications: Since it stimulates digestive function, prickly ash should best be avoided in conditions such as ulcerative colitis, peptic ulcer disease, or gastroesophageal reflux.
